The Ancient Technology Centre

The Ancient Technology Centre in Cranborne Chase forms part of Dorset County Council’s Outdoor Education Service and features building reconstructions from throughout history. Every facility has been built with the help of more than 80,000 Dorset school students and older volunteers, using locally harvested materials and a combination of ancient skills and archaeological evidence.

ICM is the main sponsor of an exciting Viking Longhouse project at the Ancient Technology Centre in Cranborne Chase, Dorset. Involvement in this project demonstrates the Institute’s commitment to the promotion of social, economic and community development. The Institute is pleased to support the Centre which is dedicated to inspiring and stimulating an interest in history and which, through its projects and activities, helps to develop new knowledge and skills amongst young people in the county.

On our recent visit to the Ancient Technology Centre, we were astounded by the progress over the past few months.

The Viking Longhouse at the Ancient Technology Centre (ATC) in Dorset has taken another step nearer to completion, as the roof is covered with shingles and its walls daubed and decorated.

With a third of the roof shingles crafted and the rafters laid in place, the exciting Viking Longhouse project is taking real shape.
